After Ipswich and Burleigh began their Mal Meninga Cup presented by Ford and Harvey Norman U19s seasons with a standalone match played between the pair the previous weekend, all other teams in all four of the Junior Statewide Competitions officially kicked off their 2025 campaigns last Saturday.
The Capras and Blackhawks fixtures proved a close encounter in all four competitions as Townsville claimed two-point victories in the Mal Meninga and Cyril Connell Cups presented by Ford as well as the Harvey Norman U19s, only for the Central Queensland U17s girls to spoil the party as they beat the Blackhawks 16-10 on an action-packed afternoon at Webb Park in Yeppoon.
Bruce Baudu rose to the occasion for the Blackhawks in the Mal Meninga Cup fixture, sealing the win with a standout two-try performance from the young winger.
Central Queensland fought back, mounting a late comeback after a try from Cruz Beazley sparked a battle to the final whistle, but in the end the Blackhawks narrowly took the win 14-12.
