The Burleigh Bears bounced back from their big loss the weekend prior in emphatic fashion, defeating nearby rivals the Tweed Seagulls 38-8 at Seagulls Sporting Complex.
It was a day out for the Laing’s, with Ebony and Sienna combining for three tries, five line breaks and 260 run metres.
Front rower Zara Canfield has effective with the ball in hand and with the foot, making 21 tackles with none missed, as well as converting four from five tries, including one off her own scoring.
Despite the loss, Mia Dendle from the Tweed Seagulls refused to stop trying, running for 90 metres and completing a whopping 40 tackles with only one missed.
Last year’s premiers looking to be regaining their stride, as the Makcay Cutters thumped the Central Queensland Capras 30-4 at BB Print Stadium.
Emily Bella starred for the Cutters, scoring two tries from lock as well as covering the in set and post try kicking duties for most of the match.
Out in the centres, Jaccoa Keyssecker was relentless as she ran for 148 metres, breaking seven tackles in the process.
After a series of close losses, the Cutters now sit in eighth, only six points below equal points differential.
The Northern Pride celebrated their first BMD Premiership victory on Saturday, defeating the Wynnum Manly Seagulls 20-14 at Barlow Park.
Jairel-Ellen Martin-Savage stood up for the Pride at halfback, scoring one try of her own and providing the assist for an incredible Sian Williams try.
In the middle, it was Sareka Mooka who provided the metal, with the Pride prop running for 129 metres.
For the Seagulls, second rower Azalleyah Maaka had herself a day out despite the loss, scoring one try and completing 27 tackles for one miss, having the highest tackle efficiency of any Seagull on the day.
In Round 3’s feature game, it was the Sunshine Coast Falcons who narrowly defeated a valiant Western Clydesdales 22-18 at Sunshine Coast Stadium.
One of the key match ups entering this bout, was the battle between Falcons captain Annette Brander and Clydesdales workhorse Zoe Cook.
Despite both women putting in great performances, it was Brander who had the last laugh – scoring a try and breaking 5 tackles in her 32-minute stint.
However, the best forward on ground was Rhemy Hinckesman, who led with her actions at lock, running for almost 130 metres and making two line breaks.
The Western Clydesdales played a spirited match despite falling short, winning the second half 10-4.
A breakneck opening half from the Falcons was enough to hold on to victory however, with their 18 points in the first 35 minutes proving enough to secure the victory.
Down the M1 in Brisbane, the top of the table clash between the Norths Devils and Souths Logan Magpies lived up to the hype, with the Magpies winning via a last-minute comeback.
With 8 minutes left in the match, the Magpies were down 16-24, seemingly out for the count against last season’s Grand Finalists.
However, a try from Queensland Under 19 representative Harlem Walker would see the Magpies reduce the deficit to two points, before Sienna Trew barged her way over in the 67th minute to win the match for her side.
Magpies’ halfback Jodeci Nicholson was clinical with the boot, nailing four from five conversions which ultimately proved crucial for victory.
Following their victory, the Magpies remain one of two undefeated sides left in the competition.
The other undefeated side left is the Brisbane Tigers, who continue to dominate their opponents – this time defeating the talented Ipswich Jets 24-16 in North Ipswich Reserve.
Tigers five-eighth Evelyn Roberts continues to string together impressive performances, scoring one and assisting another last weekend.
Though her playmaking ability is excellent, it’s her efforts with ball in hand that separate her from other halves, showing deceptive strength in contact – she broke six Jets tackles in Round 3.
Speaking of strong Tigers, Narikah Orchard ran for 122 metres from second row, making two line breaks in addition.
Courtney Robinson also deserves a mention, as the winger makes a strong argument as being the competition’s premiere winger, this week scoring a double – including an incredible 50 metre solo effort in which she beat five defenders on her way to the tryline.
For Ipswich, Ella-Jaye Harrison Leaunoa made the most of her stint off the bench, scoring twice in only 48 minutes.
