Round 16: Weekend Preview - Hostplus Cup

In 2015 the Hostplus Cup had Matt Parcell of the Ipswich Jets scoring 18 tries in 21 games.

In round three against the Capras in Rockhampton, Parcell scored off a Rod Griffin offload, speeding away to score on the right-hand side of the posts.

A decade later Hostplus Cup fans can get a glimpse of Matt Parcell 2.0, as Oliver Pascoe and the Ipswich Jets prepare to face off against the Central Queensland Capras this Sunday.

Pascoe has been sensational this year for Ipswich who have added another attacking arrowhead with the addition of the Oskar Byrant to their side.

Bryant was previously with the Tweed Seagulls, winning a Mal Meninga Cup title with them in 2021 – where he started over Broncos young gun Blake Mozer.

The Jets newfound one-two punch wreaked havoc against the Brisbane Tigers last Sunday, with Pascoe especially inflicting enormous damage onto the Tigers with his breakneck speed from dummy half.

Though the Jets faced a half time deficit, the Pascoe Bryant combination yielded two tries in five minutes, with both number 9’s scoring under the posts in the 53rd and 58th minute respectively.

The Jets hooker rotation finished with two tries, 15 runs, 221 metres, three-line breaks, one try assist, 12 tackle breaks and 52 tackles in a glorious winters day out.

However, the Central Queensland Capras will be well aware of Pascoe’s danger with ball in hand, as the competition’s premiere hooker scored a double the last time these two teams faced off.

The Jets also won their last game against the men from Rockhampton, though the Capras had won the three before that, also winning in their last venture to the North Ipswich Reserve.

Though the Capras currently find themselves sitting equal bottom on the table, an upset this Sunday could prove to be the catalyst that sets a late finals charge in motion.

The Capras have made finals the last three years in a row but now find themselves with only two wins after 12 games played this season.

The Capras need to take their strengths and capitalise on that - Nixon Putt is an elite off-loader and runner of the football.

Combined with the attacking upside of James Walsh at centre, the Capras have enough static energy to electrify their season.

Walsh has scored five tries for the Dolphins in the NRLQ series will look to capitalise on that form this weekend.
