Round 17: Weekend Preview - Hostplus Cup

413 days ago Tye Ingebrigtsen took over as head coach of the Ipswich Jets, with his first game in charge being against the Norths Devils at North Ipswich Reserve.

The Devils cashed in on the disruption at the Jets and won convincingly, defeating the jets 50-16.

This Sunday Ingebrigtsen will be able to see how far his jets have come in those 413 days, as he prepares once more to host the Devils at North Ipswich Reserve.

When Ingebrigtsen took the clip board at the Jets, they had won only one of their last 32 games – with the Devils inflicting their 15th straight loss at home.

Now as of Round 17, the Jets find themselves in fifth place with nine wins, equalling their most wins in a season since 2019.

Head-to-head it’s all the Devils with Norths having 30 wins to the Jets’ 20 – with the sides splitting two draws in their 52 games against each other.

Norths have won the last three games at the North Ipswich Reserve while Ipswich haven’t beaten the Devils in Ipswich since 2021.

When the Jets last beat the Devils in Ipswich, it was current Norths Devils premiership winning captain Kierran Moseley scoring two tries for Ipswich.

This week will be the Jets 300th home game in the Hostplus Cup and what better way to celebrate a milestone with a win over the reigning premiers.

The Jets are coming off a convincing win over the Central Queenslnad Capras 34-12.

The Jets accumulated 34 points, but their attack was clunky, the Jets first try was slick but from there the attack stalled.

Despite the points scored, it was Ipswich’s defence which put them in the driver’s seat, providing room for error in attack.

The Devils are likely to put up more of a challenge than the Capras did, so defensive consistency will no doubt be a focus for the green and white.

The Devils have entered unchartered waters, losing their last three games.

How the Devils respond to their recent form slump will tell plenty about where the squad is at as they lead into the finals.

In 2025 the Devils are averaging 26 points a game to the Jets 24 points.

Defensively, the Devils also reign supreme, averaging 17 points conceded a game to the Jets’ 21.

Many questions will be answered this Sunday.

Are the premiers out of form?

How much has Ipswich improved under Ingebrigtsen?

Have the Blackhawks, Magpies and Bears awoken a sleeping giant?

Find out this Sunday with this week’s feature match broadcasted live and free across Qplus.tv, Kayo and 9now!
