Round 5: Weekend Wrap - BMD Premiership

The Brisbane Tigers extend their undefeated streak to five games, defeating the Sunshine Coast Falcons 36-10 at Totally Workwear Stadium.

The Tigers outside backs continue to dominate, with Aleksandra Tunufai standing out amongst a stellar group, scoring two tries, along with three line breaks and two try assists from centre.

Amongst the Tigers’ forwards it was Narikah Orchard who once again put in a workhorse shift, breaking eight tackles throughout her 129 run metres gained and making 14 tackles with none missed.

The Tigers will now prepare to make it six wins from six matches next weekend, as they take on the third placed Burleigh Bears.

The reigning premiers avoided victory by the barest of margins against the Wynnum Manly Seagulls, as the Mackay Cutters left BB Print Stadium with a 22-20 victory.

After racing out to a 12-nil lead within five minutes, the Cutters would let in two tries late in the first half, entering the sheds up 12-8.

In a bizarro version of the first half, it would be the Seagulls who scored two tries within the opening five minutes, going on to lead the match 20-12.

The Cutters would reduce the deficit to two points in the 62nd minute after Vanique Malayta managed to shrug off three defenders near the try line.

Now in the final minute of the game, the Cutters would have one last roll of the dice for victory.

Starting their set in the Seagulls’ 20-metre line, the Cutters would shift the ball left towards Shaylee Hazledine who provided the match winning assist for Miah Powell, as Mackay bounce back from last weekend’s loss.

The Burleigh Bears continue their strong run of form, making it four wins from five matches as they defeat the Northern Pride 26-16 at Barlow Park.

Burleigh Prop Zara Canfield scored 18 of the Bears’ 26 points, scoring a hat-trick and making three of her five conversions.

Another standout for Burleigh was winger Brianna Toopi who ran for 149 metres in addition to an incredible try saver early in the first half.

The Bears will return home this weekend as they prepare for their toughest bout yet, when they take on the undefeated Brisbane Tigers this Saturday.

The heroics of Georgia Sim propelled the Western Clydesdales to a dominant 30-4 victory over the Central Queensland Capras in Rockhampton.

The fullback delivered one of the most impressive performances in BMD Premiership history as she finished the match with two tries, two try assists, 268 run metres and a truly unbelievable 17 tackle breaks.

Sim’s performance somewhat overshadowed the other brilliant efforts of the Clydesdales outside backs, as Zoe Robson finished with a hat-trick on the wing, while Reagan McMillan finished with 14 tackle breaks at centre.

The Capras are still searching for their first win of the year – and will no doubt be looking forward to next weekend when they take on the 11th placed Tweed Seagulls at home.

The Norths Devils are playing like a team scorned by a Grand Final loss last year, as they continue their strong run of form with a 42-10 victory over the Ipswich Jets in Ipswich.

Devils’ strike centre Paris Pickering continues to assert herself as the competition’s premiere centre, once again displaying incredible strength close to the tryline as she crossed over for the Devils' first try.

The Devils remained in control throughout the match, despite late tries to Ipswich courtesy of Gemma Schnaubelt and Ella-Jaye Harrison Leaunoa.

The Jets are still yet to win at home this season, though they’re undefeated when playing away – and will look to continue this streak next weekend when they take on the Wynnum Manly Seagulls at BMD Kougari Oval.

The final match of Round 5 saw the Souths Logan Magpies dominate the Tweed Seagulls 36-4 at Seagulls Sporting Complex.

The Magpies were boosted by the inclusion of former Harvey Norman Queensland Under 19 fullback Montaya Hudson, who picked up a hat-trick on the day including a brilliant 70 metre solo effort.

Incumbent Harvey Norman Queensland Under 19 representative, Harlem Walker, was just as damaging, scoring a long range try similar to Hudson’s.

Following their victory, the Magpies now sit second on the ladder, though they lead the competition in points scored.
