Round 6: Weekend Wrap - BMD Premiership

The Ipswich Jets have snapped their three-game losing streak with a narrow 28-22 victory over the Wynnum Manly Seagulls at BMD Kougari Oval.

Jets fullback Ella-Jaye Harrison-Leaunoa put in a brilliant attacking performance, scoring a double and assisting a try.

Seagulls centre Cortez Te Pou also put in a great performance, making two line breaks and scoring a try in addition to her 141 run metres.

Despite the Seagulls having only won a single match this season, four of their five losses have been by six points or less, showing that they are a much more formidable side than their 11th placed ladder position suggests.

From 11th place to 12th place, the Central Queensland Capras have earned their first points of the season, salvaging a draw against the Tweed Seagulls in Rockhampton.

After a low scoring first half, the two sides would pile on six tries in 25 minutes in what was a true whirlwind finish.

After Seagulls centre Raimee Wright secured her hat-trick, Tylah Phillps would bring the Capras back into the match with a late double, levelling the scores at 18 apiece, which is how the final score would remain come the full-time whistle.

Phillips produced a woman of the match performance at home, making 128 metres and completing 25 tackles to go along with her two tries.

For the Seagulls, front rower Ruby Fifita got through a mountain of work in the middle, running for 140 metres and making 32 tackles in her 61 minute stint.

The Brisbane Tigers continue their undefeated season, defeating a valiant Burleigh Bears side 18-12 at UAA Park.

For the majority of the match it was the Bears who sat in the driver’s seat, though their inability to convert following a try would prove critical late in the match.

Despite the Bears scoring three tries, the Tigers would keep pace with their two converted tries, with a last minute Courtney Robinson try ultimately securing victory for the league leaders.

Fresh off her selection in the Australian Schoolgirls side, Tigers five-eighth Evelyn Roberts lived up to the hype once more, assisting two tries and running for over 100 metres.

The Devils continue to string together impressive performances, this time usurping the Mackay Cutters 22-10 at Bishop Park.

Paris Pickering’s move to fullback proved seamless, scoring one try and assisting another while breaking ten tackles.

Front rower Fanua Rimoni continues to assert herself as an elite front rower, running for 200 metres for the second week in-a-row.

The Devils remained in control for the entirety of the match and will enjoy their week off before heading north to Cairns to take on the Northern Pride in their next fixture.

A late try from Kimberley Hunt saw the Northern Pride narrowly defeat the Sunshine Coast Falcons 22-20 at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

Capping off her hat-trick in the 67th minute, Hunt’s herculean performance at centre included 128 run metres and 6 tackle breaks, as well as a 75% conversion rate which proved vital in her side’s two-point victory.

Alongside Hunt, Nadia Windleborn was also pivotal in securing a Pride victory, making 38 tackles at hooker as well as running 76 metres from dummy half.

Despite the result, Annette Brander put in a captain’s knock at prop, scoring twice and running for 100 metres.

The Pride now find themselves in the top six after losing their opening two matches of the season.

The Souths Logan Magpies continue their winning ways with a 20-16 victory over the Western Clydesdales at BMD Kougari Oval.

After the Clydesdales kept pace with the Magpies throughout the first half, two tries in quick succession in the second-half would see the Magpies pull away as they would go on to lead 20-10 after the 46th minute.

From there, a late consolation try to Zoe Cook would reduce the deficit to four points, though the Magpies ultimately remained in control through the second half, as they remain in touching distance with the Tigers at the top of the ladder.
