Queensland Rugby League will celebrate its second annual Licensed Clubs Round this weekend (August 16-17) as competition heats up across the Hostplus Cup.
With just three regular season matches remaining, the battle for the minor premiership and positions within the top eight is at fever pitch.
It is a similar story throughout the BMD Premiership and community leagues all over Queensland, as clubs and participants strive to lift the premiership trophy.
For many clubs, a momentous grand final appearance wouldn’t be possible without the immense contribution of licensed clubs and their endless support of grassroots rugby league.
Following the success of last year’s inaugural Licensed Clubs Round in Queensland, the QRL is again excited to partner with Leagues Clubs Australia (LCA) for this weekend’s feature round.
The initiative will deservedly shine the spotlight on the input of LCA and its member clubs, who are proud supporters of rugby league and the wider community.
Licenced clubs contributed more than 27 million dollars to the Queensland rugby league community last year.
QRL chief executive officer Ben Ikin said this support played a critical role in getting boys and girls on the rugby league field with their local clubs.
“There are many factors that make rugby league more accessible for our participants, and support from licensed clubs sits at the top of that list," Ikin said.
“Whether it’s ground preparations, the maintenance of clubhouses and facilities, covering the costs of jerseys and insurance, licensed clubs are helping to make our great game even greater.”
Licensed Clubs Round officially gets underway this Saturday with Hostplus Cup matches in Miles, Mackay, Rockhampton and the Sunshine Coast.
LCA chief executive officer Don Hammond said:
“Licensed clubs support of rugby league is crucial because it not only enhances the development of young players, male and female, but also fosters a sense of belonging and community engagement,” Hammond said.
“The $27 million investment underscores the significance of nurturing grassroots talent and promoting the values of teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship from an early age.
“Licensed clubs often serve as hubs for social interaction and community engagement.
“By supporting these clubs, you're not just investing in sports but also in the social fabric of communities.”
