Round 10: Weekend Preview - BMD Premiership

The Sunshine Coast Falcons can ill-afford a loss in their penultimate match of the season, as the Burleigh Bears look to keep pace with the elite of the BMD Premiership this Sunday at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

The Falcons will enter this matchup determined to amend last week’s disappointing loss, as they fell 32-12 to the Ipswich Jets after narrowly losing to the red-hot Magpies a fortnight ago.

A lacklustre second half performance from the Falcons saw them concede 22 points in the second-half half alone.

The second-half slump has become a worrying trend for the Falcons, with the Sunshine Coast women conceding 56 second-half points in their last three matches.

Despite last week’s loss, Makalya Henry and Reegan Hicks were brilliant at fullback and prop respectively, with Henry scoring a try and making two line breaks, while Hicks ran for 114 metres, broke eight tackles and contributed a line break and a try assist.

The Falcons cannot afford to relax in the second half versus the Bears, as Burleigh have scored 70 points in their last two matches.

Burleigh centre Deleni Paitai has been electric as of late, scoring six tries and averaging 128 run metres in her last four matches.

One of the key matchups to watch out for this Sunday is the fullback battle between Georgia Bartlett and Jasmin Morrissey.

Both fullbacks are coming off brilliant performances in their last outings, and both possess skilful playmaking and pace to burn.

A loss for the Falcons this Sunday could serve as a death knell for their season, while a win for the Bears will secure their spot in this year’s finals series, and could allow them to secure a Week One bye in the finals, should the Magpies finish their season with two losses.

No matter what, this Sunday’s televised clash promises to be unmissable.
