Isaac Jones is hoping to lead the University of Sunshine Coast to its first ever Universities Rugby League Queensland (URLQ) premiership tonight on the back of an amazing captain’s knock.
Uni SC Spartans will meet the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in the Grand Final at Davies Park, West End tonight at 7pm.
Imposing forward Jones scored a hat-trick of tries in Uni SC’s dismantling of four-time defending premiers the University of Queensland (UQ) last Wednesday.
Jones’ charges up the middle will be pivotal against the QUT Trouts tonight, after he scored a try in the first half last week before adding two more in the second stanza.
The Spartans’ speedy centre Luke Barton had broken the game open when he raced 70 metres to score on the second tackle of the match.
He added a second try later on Uni SC won 36-12 and grabbed a chance to win a grand final for the first time since joining the URLQ in 2021.
But they will have to be at their best against the Trouts, who were also impressive in their grand final qualifier.
The Trouts beat Griffith University 28-6 after Caylum Roy and Liam Bright opened the game with tries to give QUT a 12-2 halftime lead.
Three tries in the second half confirmed the Trouts’ spot in the URLQ decider, which will kick off at 7pm.
