The Mackay Cutters will face a tall order in their final game of the season as they attempt to contain a red-hot Ipswich Jets side hunting for a home final.
The Ipswich Jets will take the field this Sunday at North Ipswich Reserve having won four of their last five matches, defeating the Burleigh Bears and Souths Logan Magpies during their recent purple patch.
The Jets join the table-topping Brisbane Tigers as the only other team to defeat the Bears and Magpies this season.
Last weekend was a true statement from Ipswich, asserting themselves as genuine bolters for a Grand Final berth by usurping the so far dominant Souths Logan Magpies.
In a truly even game, the Jets were able to capitalise on their bulk of possession, completing their sets at a high rate and making impactful post contact metres through Elizabeth Naleba and Lishainah Ulugia.
Jets’ middles Iokapete Fetu and Lishainah Ulugia were able to lay a great platform for Ella-Jaye Harrison-Leaunoa at five-eighth, who finished the match with two tries and a try assist in a brilliant performance.
The Mackay Cutters enter this bout on the back of two consecutive losses, having been eliminated from finals contention following their loss to the Western Clydesdales last week.
Young gun Jennifer Kimber was immense in her side’s defeat last weekend, with the Cutters winger making three line breaks and ten tackle breaks in her best outing for the season.
If the Cutters are to surprise the Jets this weekend, Caitlin Tanner will be a big part of the upset at lock.
The middle forward has playmaking ability in spades and offers far more than a standard lock, being able to isolate defenders with ball in hand – as well as being able to put in deft kicks when required.
