Everything You Need to Know - QPICC and Junior QPICC 2025

With Pasifika pride and passion on full display this month with the staging of the Pacific Championships, there is even more opportunity to get involved with both the junior and senior Queensland Pacific Island Cultural Carnival events taking place over the next two weeks.

The youth take centre stage this weekend (Saturday, October 25) at Bill Norris Oval in one of the biggest events yet; giving young players from Pacific Island communities the chance to gather together to represent their heritage. It’s a opportunity to grow, connect and take part in something bigger.

This year sees the return of a number of participating Nations, with last year’s representatives Samoa, Cook Islands, Papua New Guinea and Niue joined by Fiji, Tonga and Aotearoa Māori sides this year.

Fully sanctioned by the Queensland Rugby League, all participating Nations are also following best practice guidelines from the Child Safe Organisations Act to ensure a safe and fun tournament.

After the stars of the future set the tone, the competition heats up with the staging of the three-day senior QPICC tournament on Friday, October 31 to Sunday, November 2.

Also played out of Bill Norris Oval, this year’s tournament sees the welcome return to the fold of Tonga, Fiji and Aotearoa Māori teams, adding to the rich and diverse blend of cultures.

Beginning with the Opening Ceremony on Friday night, all participating Nations will share a song, dance, reading or other special performance to showcase and share their culture.

After the cultural exchange, the attention heads to the field, with many fierce contests ensuing.

Already, there are more than 3500 registered participants across the tournaments, with more than 2500 male participants and just under 1000 female participants. There are also 1104 Junior QPICC participants registered to take part.

Last year saw Samoa dominate all but one of the finals, with Niue upsetting the powerhouse in the Under 18 final.

The men's Opens match was a close 18-10 win for Samoa over PNG, while the Samoa women's side - lead by a double from now Brisbane Broncos premiership-winner Shalom Sauaso - claimed a 22-4 win, also over PNG. Sauaso is now representing her Nation at the Pacific Championships.
