Tales of rivalry and the exploits of stars from the past inspired rival Hostplus Cup stars who came together in Brisbane today for the official season launch.
Players and coaches were motivated by the achievements of those who have come before them over 30 years of intense competition, with many significant historical items on display at the State Library of Queensland.
Newspaper clippings, match-day programs and even old jerseys from the inaugural statewide grand final in 1996 captivated guests, less than two weeks out from the opening round of the Hostplus Cup season.
QRL chief executive officer Ben Ikin acknowledged the support of Hostplus and the statewide competition clubs ahead of the historic season.
“The 2026 Hostplus Cup marks a milestone moment for rugby league in Queensland, as we proudly celebrate 30 years of a competition built on fierce rivalry, community spirit and genuine pathways for emerging talent,” Ikin said.
“For three decades, this competition has showcased the strength of our game — from the coast through to the Far North, and in more recent times with the unique international flavour of the Papua New Guinea Hunters.
“We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of Hostplus, whose long‑standing partnership has helped strengthen QRL pathways for aspirational players, coaches, administrators and referees.
“As we enter this milestone year, we’re not just honouring the past — we’re building on it.
“The Hostplus Cup continues to be a breeding ground for future stars and a source of pride for every region it represents. I can’t wait to see what this year brings.”
Hostplus CEO David Elia said the Fund was proud of its partnership with the QRL as the Hostplus Cup marks a significant milestone.
“Hostplus is proud to continue its support of the QRL this season as it marks 30 years of competition,” Elia said.
“The QRL Hostplus Cup provides a powerful platform to grow our brand at scale and connect with members across Queensland, underpinned by a shared focus on sustained performance and long‑term success.”
Today’s launch also saw the QRL and XXXX celebrate the continuation of one of the state’s longest-standing sporting partnerships, with XXXX reaffirming their support of rugby league across the entire Queensland pathway, from community and statewide competitions through to the Maroons.
The opening round of the 2026 season will be played on the weekend of March 7-8 and will feature some fascinating match ups, including the clash between the Western Clydesdales and Brisbane Tigers in Toowoomba.
The Clydesdales are buoyed by the appointment of innovative co-coaches Ben and Shane Walker, who return to their home city confident of success after previously leading Ipswich to state and national titles.
The Walkers go up against a Tigers outfit that will also have new voice in 2026 following the appointment of Jimmy Lenihan.
Lenihan has two Hostplus Cup titles to his name with the Burleigh Bears, as well as numerous years of NRL coaching experience with the Gold Coast Titans.
Former Norths Devils premiership-winning coach Dave Elliott dons the red and white when he guides the Redcliffe Dolphins in Round 1 against the Bears.
The first week of the season will also see former Northern Pride coach Joe O’Callaghan take charge of the Tweed Seagulls in their opening round clash against the Sunshine Coast Falcons.
Newly-appointed Pride coach Sam Williams and his team have the Round 1 bye, meaning they won’t get the opportunity to press for their first points until O’Callaghan’s Tweed team arrives in Cairns in Round 2.
