There were heroes galore in round four of the QRL junior representative statewide competitions.
In the Mal Meninga Cup (presented by Ford), Wynnum Manly have looked to fullback Nate Wallin to step off his right foot and speed through any slight gap left in the defence.
Every team will be on high alert for the head-gear wearing fullback warrior who was outstanding for the Seagulls.
It’s hard to know what to like more, the right hand try stepping through and showing pace, or the dummy half scoot and 40m dash. Or maybe you prefer the long pass to put his winger Tristan MacDonald over in the right-hand corner.
Wynnum came away with a commanding win 30-6 win over the Central Queensland Capras and with a fullback to watch.
The Seagulls’ other star was Emily Whittaker in the Harvey Norman Under 19s match. Whittaker kicked goals, laid on tries and scored a try of her own.
Whittaker’s deft passing game was on show early in the second half when she sent a beautiful flat pass wide to right centre Hoana Hori-Hohepa for a 26-nil lead.
At that score line, the Seagulls weren’t going to be troubled as they raced away to 38-0 victory.
In the Harvey Norman Under 17s, it was a Bear that charged onto the ball and kick started a huge Burleigh win.
Olivia Filikitonga dragged half the Devils with her as she went over the line and slammed it down in the opening minutes of play.
Filikitonga finished with a double before half-time and the Bears were home with a thumping 48-4 win.
There was tries everywhere you looked. Winger Zihade Laterre secured a rapid-fire double in the 10 tries to one demolition.
Then it was back to BMD Kougari Oval, and another Seagull was on fire in the Cyril Connell Cup. Wynnum were too good for the Capras 38-6.
Calvin Harris-Tavita had his best game in his four game Cyril Connell Cup career with the young New Zealand half stepping and passing his way around and through the Central Queensland Capras.
The stepping back inside for his own try was enough but then he added in conventional passing for tries.
Wynnum’s outside backs will sleep peacefully thinking about what is coming their way in the second half of the season.
