Mini Maroons clinics to ignite pride ahead of QLD Day

The Queensland Government and Queensland Rugby League are teaming up to deliver fun‑filled rugby league experiences for juniors across the state with the introduction of Mini Maroons clinics.

Designed for boys and girls aged 5–12, Mini Maroons clinics are open to all abilities, with a strong focus on fun, friendship and Maroon pride.

The clinics provide a welcoming, inclusive environment where kids can learn basic skills, make new mates and show their passion for the mighty Maroons.

The launch comes as Queensland prepares to enter the State of Origin arena for both the men’s and women’s series against New South Wales, giving young fans the chance to connect with the Maroons spirit at an early age.

With the support of the Queensland Government, clinics will be delivered throughout south‑east and regional Queensland, starting in Mackay on May 1 and running through to Queensland Day.

QLD Day will be celebrated on June 6, with the Queensland Government delivering a bumper program in the leadup and on the big day.

Queensland Sports Minister Tim Mander said the QRL’s Mini Maroons clinics would be the perfect way to get our little Queenslanders right into the QLD Day action.

“Queenslanders love their footy and what better way for our kids to get involved than putting on a maroon jersey and learning from coaches and their State of Origin heroes,” Minister Mander said.

“Queensland is the home of Australian sport and how good will it be to see a sea of mini maroons on footy fields across the state, celebrating what it means to be a Queenslander.”

Queensland Rugby League chief executive officer Ben Ikin said the Mini Maroons clinics were about more than just footy skills.

“The Mini Maroons clinics are all about inclusion — kids of all abilities coming together to have fun, make friends and feel part of something special,” Ikin said.

“Rugby league is at its best when it’s fun and welcoming, and these clinics are designed to give every child that opportunity, no matter their background or experience.”

“We want kids to feel proud to wear Maroon, to understand what it represents, and to start building that spirit and connection to our game and our state from a young age.

“If we can light that spark early and make kids feel proud and connected to the Maroons, we’re setting them up for a lifelong love of rugby league.”

Ikin and Minister Mander launched the Mini Maroons initiative at Aspley juniors alongside  Dolphins forward Tom Gilbert, Broncos NRLW star Julie Robinson and a host of Former Origin Greats.

The clinics will be available to youngsters who become a QLDER Junior member, unlocking access to the Mini Maroons experience.
