Upton to lead Maroons, Brown named vice captain for 2026

Tamika Upton will lead the Harvey Norman Queensland Maroons in 2026, with Lauren Brown named vice captain ahead of the upcoming State of Origin series.

After sharing the captaincy with Ali Brigginshaw last year, Upton steps into the role as sole skipper, continuing her rise as one of the most influential players in the game.

The dynamic fullback has earned the respect of her teammates through her performances, but just as importantly through the way she prepares, competes and carries herself every day in camp.

Queensland Maroons coach Nathan Cross said Upton’s leadership stood out from the moment she first took on the role in 2025.

“Tamika leads in a way that brings people with her,” Cross said.

“She’s driven, she’s composed, and she knows what it means to represent Queensland.

You saw last year how much it meant to her and how strongly the group responded to her. We’re excited to see her take that next step again this year.

Brown’s appointment as vice-captain rewards her consistency and growing influence within the squad.

A key playmaker, Brown has built a reputation as a calm and reliable presence under pressure, with her voice and actions carrying weight across the group.

Cross said her leadership would be crucial alongside Upton.

“Lauren is someone the players naturally look to,” he said.

“She competes hard, she’s tough, and she’s always putting the team first.

“She’ll play a big role supporting Tamika and helping drive the standards we expect as a Queensland team.”

With leadership locked in, the Maroons now turn their attention to Game I, determined to represent Queensland with pride and set the tone for the 2026 series.
