Magpies show fight: Round 7 Hostplus Cup preview

There is a famous line in the 1987 movie Predator that might just fit the Souths Logan Magpies.

“I ain't got time to bleed.”

The Magpies were down 22-8 against the Bears and came back to draw. They were down 24-6 against the Western Clydesdales and came back to win 34-24.

The Magpies have only led at half time in one of their six games and yet somehow have two wins and two draws to show from the first six weeks.

The Magpies just won’t go away in 2026, while the Falcons seem more ‘Arnie’ than Predator.

The Falcons have four wins from six games and sit in second place on 10 points.

They have won their last four games but in another twist the Magpies have won their last three home games against the Falcons.

The Magpies and Falcons had contrasting last start wins.

The Falcons were flying 22-6 against the Northern Pride but could only manage one try after half time to win 26-24 while the Magpies were down 24-6 and managed six second half tries to win.

The Falcons will want more of their first half performance this week while the Magpies will be after a continuation of their second half.

The fact the Falcons are in second place but haven’t been mentioned; means they’re flying under the radar.

They’ve scored 21 tries in five games compared to the Magpies’ 28. But the Falcons defence has been excellent with 60 points fewer than the Magpies.

That’s the Falcons strength; they showed a connection in defence and have only conceded 100 points.

Led by hooker Danny Heehan with 173 tackles, the Falcons are defending their way to wins, while the Magpies are attacking their way to wins.

Souths’ try scoring winger Phranklyn Mano-Le-Mamea has a list of tries nearly as long as his name with six in six games in 2026; and 12 in his 15 Hostplus Cup games.

Sunday’s feature match, presented by National Storage, will be broadcast live and free across Qplus.tv, Kayo and 9Now.
