Mackay stun Townsville in epic comeback to claim XXXX Foley Shield

Mackay have produced one of the great Foley Shield comebacks, storming home to defeat Townsville 32–26 on Sunday afternoon to secure the 2026 XXXX Foley Shield title.

In a performance built on grit, belief and pure fighting spirit, the Mackay Seagulls overcame a 22–4 halftime deficit and a significant turnaround in conditions, to claim Northern Queensland’s premier regional honour.

Backing up from a physical clash against Cairns less than 24 hours earlier, Mackay entered the contest at a clear disadvantage against a fresh Townsville outfit. Early on, that toll showed.

Townsville controlled the opening half with speed and execution, racing out to a 22–4 lead by the break and putting one hand on the Shield. When they crossed again shortly after halftime through centre Benn Campagmolo extending the margin further, the task ahead for Mackay looked all but insurmountable.

But the Seagulls refused to go away.

With 20 minutes remaining, Mackay found their spark.

A clever grubber in behind the line saw Keelan O’Brien chase hard, regather and score in a moment of individual brilliance, a play that shifted the energy of the match and ignited belief across the group.

With just five minutes to play, O’Brien struck again, slicing through to level the scores and set up a grandstand finish.

Then came the moment that sealed it.

With under a minute remaining, Julius Kapeli powered his way across for the match-winning try, capping off a remarkable comeback and sending Mackay players and supporters into celebration.

The final whistle confirmed a 32–26 victory, and with it, the Foley Shield.

The result means Mackay cannot be caught atop the standings, regardless of Monday’s final fixture between Cairns and Townsville, who will now play off for second place.

More than just a win, it was a statement.

A performance that showcased the depth of talent in the region, the importance of the Foley Shield as a proving ground, and the resilience that defines rugby league in North Queensland.

For Mackay, it marks a return to the top for the first time since 2021, and a reminder that no matter the odds, this side can never be counted out.
