Former Hostplus Cup and National Rugby League player Trent Young has been appointed to the QRL Board as Statewide Competitions Director.
Young brings a wealth of rugby league and business management experience to the position previously occupied by Brendan O’Farrell, who made the decision to step down in June to focus on other professional commitments and responsibilities.
Young, who was raised in Roma and played junior rugby league in Toowoomba, played 30 Cup games for the Souths Magpies and 80 matches for the Easts Tigers between 2003 and 2009.
The talented hooker also played 15 NRL games for the South Sydney Rabbitohs and represented Queensland Residents.
In 2004, Young and his brother Scott founded Young Guns Container Crew, which now provides services across Australian cities and multiple countries.
Young has also applied his business knowledge to several organisations at board and director levels.
Young said he was honoured to have the opportunity to give back to a game that had played such a significant role in his life.
“Rugby league has given me a lot over the years, both personally and professionally, so I’m excited about the opportunity to contribute to the future of the game in Queensland,” Young said.
“Queensland Rugby League has built strong pathways for both males and females who have ambitions in the game and a genuine passion for rugby league, and I’m looking forward to helping strengthen those opportunities even further.
“What has always stood out to me is the strength of rugby league’s connection to communities right across the state.
“From grassroots clubs through to the elite level, the game brings people together, and I’m passionate about supporting those community links and ensuring rugby league continues to grow and inspire.”
QRL Chair Brian Canavan said Young would add valuable experience and perspective.
“Trent brings an outstanding combination of rugby league knowledge, commercial success and governance experience to the Board,” Canavan said.
“He understands the game from the grassroots level through to the elite level and has remained strongly connected to rugby league throughout his career in business.
“His experience in leading and growing a successful organisation, combined with his passion for our game and the communities it serves, will be a tremendous asset as we continue to strengthen rugby league across Queensland.
