For half a century, Alf Abdullah has been helping rugby league thrive in Sarina.
Now, the much-loved Sarina Crocodiles figure has been formally recognised for his enormous contribution to the game, presented with a 50 Years of Service trophy by Queensland Rugby League.
The honour came on a fitting night for one of the region’s great rugby league servants, with Abdullah also celebrating his 90th birthday.
Known affectionately as “King Croc”, Abdullah’s influence stretches across generations of players, volunteers and families in the Sarina community.
His work with the Crocodiles has seen him play a role in the rugby league journeys of some of Queensland’s biggest names, including Martin Bella, Wendell Sailor, Daly Cherry-Evans, Dale Shearer, Kevin Campion and Reuben Cotter.
But his contribution has never been limited to the players who went on to reach the highest level.
For decades, Abdullah has been part of the fabric of rugby league in Sarina, helping build the club, develop opportunities for players and ensure the game remained an important part of the local community.
He was also helping push rugby league forward long before many of today’s structures existed.
Decades ago, Abdullah was involved in introducing home-and-away club matches, an innovative approach at the time and an example of his willingness to find new ways to strengthen the game.
His impact has extended well beyond results on a football field.
Through his passion, commitment and countless hours of service, Abdullah has influenced generations of people involved in rugby league and helped create an environment where players, coaches, volunteers and supporters could feel part of something bigger.
Reaching 50 years of service is a remarkable achievement in any field.
To reach the milestone while also celebrating a 90th birthday made the occasion even more special for a man whose connection to rugby league remains as strong as ever.
After five decades of service to the game, the title feels more than appropriate.
