Darius Boyd appointed Queensland Maroons head coach

Queensland Rugby League has today appointed Darius Boyd as the Queensland Maroons head coach for the next two years.

Boyd brings strong credentials for the role after a playing career that included 28 State of Origin matches for his beloved Maroons and immediate coaching success with Queensland Under 19 teams.

Boyd said he was “extremely honoured” to be entrusted with coaching Queensland’s State of Origin team.

“It’s a privileged position and I’m very grateful for the opportunity,” Boyd said.

“I understand the responsibility that comes with the role as well. My job is to build on the legacy created by the many great Queensland players and coaches who have come before us.”

A Parkwood Sharks and Mudgeeraba Redbacks junior, Boyd honed his skills with the Burleigh Bears within QRL pathway competitions before making an immediate impact in the National Rugby League with the Brisbane Broncos.

Over a decorated professional career, Boyd played 337 NRL matches across stints with the Broncos, St George Illawarra Dragons and Newcastle Knights.

He was a premiership winner with both Brisbane and St George Illawarra and claimed the prestigious Clive Churchill Medal in 2010 following the Dragons' grand final victory.

However, it was his time in Queensland's famous maroon jersey that left an indelible mark on the game and his own rugby league journey.

Boyd scored 17 tries for the Maroons and was recognised with both the FOGS Dick "Tosser" Turner Medal and the Ron McAuliffe Medal for his contribution to Queensland rugby league.

His representative career also included 23 Test appearances for Australia, during which he crossed for 16 tries between 2008 and 2017.

Since retiring from playing in 2020, Boyd has dedicated himself to coaching and wellbeing initiatives, while continuing to contribute to Queensland rugby league through its representative programs.

His coaching credentials have continued to grow through his work with the Queensland Under 19s, guiding the young Maroons to consecutive victories over New South Wales while helping develop emerging talent, including Cooper Bai, Phillip Coates, Coby Black and Javon Andrews.

QRL Chair Brian Canavan said Boyd's appointment reflected both his deep understanding of Queensland's culture and his continued growth as a coach and leader.

“Darius has lived and breathed what it means to represent Queensland,” Canavan said.

“His playing achievements speak for themselves, but what has impressed us just as much is the work he has done since retirement to develop as a coach and leader.

“He has built strong relationships throughout our pathways system, earned the respect of players and staff, and demonstrated a genuine commitment to helping young people reach their potential.

“Darius understands the responsibility that comes with the Maroons jersey. He knows our culture, our history and the standards required to succeed at the highest level.”
