Biography

Billy Moore has never claimed to have a mortgage on the 'Queenslander' call, acknowledging it was around well before he burst onto the State of Origin scene in 1992.

But for pure spine-chilling passion of delivery, the North Sydney backrower will always be identified with the call, given the Channel 9 cameras captured him delivering the rallying cry, in the players' race at the Sydney Football Stadium, as the Queenslanders emerged from the dressing rooms for the second half of Game I of the 1995 series, which the star studded Blues were expected to win easily.

I learnt it from the late, Peter Jackson; he told me ‘Queenslander’ meant find something from inside yourself, no excuses, help your mate.

Billy Moore FOG #75

Queensland led 2-0 at halftime in that first game, and that was still the score at fulltime. The Maroons went on to make a clean sweep of the series, with Moore at lock in all three games. Born at Tenterfield in New South Wales, but raised at Wallangarra on the Queensland side of the border, Moore represented NSW at Under 17 level, via his cross-border playing commitments.

He signed with North Sydney in 1989, and stayed a one club man, retiring at the end of the 1999 season when it was announced Norths and Manly would combine to form the Northern Eagles. He played 211 matches for the Bears and was named on the bench, in the club's Team of the Century in 2008.

Moore played 17 Origin matches for Queensland, 15 in the starting side. He played three Tests for Australia, wearing the green and gold against South Africa and Fiji during the 1995 World Cup in Britain, and then playing against a Rest of the World Selection in Brisbane in 1997.

Post football, Moore forged a successful career in the media and is an accomplished after dinner and motivational speaker. He also shone as a restaurateur on the Sunshine Coast.
