Biography

David Stagg was a fine utility player, most at home at lock or in the second row, but also capable of doing a fine job in the centres.

He was born in Townsville, but the family moved to Brisbane when he was very young, and he played junior rugby league for Norths Aspley, as well as playing league and union at Padua College.

Stagg came off the bench in Redcliffe's 34-10 win over Ipswich in the 2002 Queensland Cup grand final at Dolphin Oval, and the next month played centre for Queensland Residents against an Emerging Origin squad, coached by Wayne Bennett. Future Origin superstar, Billy Slater was on the bench in the Residents' side, which was coached by Neil Wharton.

Stagg was 19 when he made his NRL debut for the Broncos against Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in Round 18, 2003. He made his State of Origin debut for Queensland in Game I of the 2006 series, playing in the second row. He played centre for the Broncos in their 15-8 win over Melbourne in the 2006 NRL grand final, doing a magnificent job. He had played in the forwards for most of the season, but coach, Bennett switched him to the backs in the run home to the finals.

Stagg signed with Canterbury in 2009, and won the Club's Best Player award, as well as being named Dally M Lock of the Year. He averaged more than 40 tackles a match in that season, his easy going nature in direct contrast to his attitude on the field. Stagg came off the bench in the 2012 NRL grand final against Melbourne, a match the Storm won 14-4.

He falls into that Steve Bell category. He's a player who will come out and do a great job for Queensland.

Stagg returned to Brisbane in 2013, playing another three seasons for the club. He had played 206 NRL games across his 13 seasons.

Since his retirement, Stagg has remained close to the game, coaching age teams at Norths Aspley, and also working at the club as football operations manager.

He also has worked as a game development officer for the Broncos. Stagg is a qualified civil engineer and has won awards for academic excellence.
