Biography

Versatile John Doyle had unlimited talent, but his career was inhibited by injury. Doyle played his junior rugby league with the Yeppoon Seagulls, before he was signed by the North Queensland Cowboys, making his first grade debut for the club during the 1997 Super League season.

Doyle spent another five seasons in Townsville, before joining the Sydney Roosters, where he played 10 first grade matches in his final season. Equally at home at halfback, five-eighth, fullback, lock or hooker, Doyle played 19 games for the Cowboys in 1999, the same year he represented the Arthur Beetson coached Aborigines team against Papua New Guinea.

He was a very smart footballer.

In his other six seasons in elite level football, Doyle averaged less than 10 games, because of a chronic knee injury.

Doyle played all three games in Queensland's Origin series win in 2001, making his debut at the same time as Cowboys' team mate, John Buttigieg, who was a fellow member of the club's Youth Development Squad, put together by inaugural Cowboys' coach, Grant Bell in 1995.

Doyle also played in the first game of the 2002 Origin series. All four games were from the bench, not surprising, considering the positions he could cover. He had the honour of scoring a try on debut.
