Biography

A product of Ipswich club Booval Swifts, Rod Morris was a no-nonsense prop, part of a select group to have won BRL premierships at two clubs - Easts and Wynnum Manly.

Morris joined older brother, Des at Easts in Brisbane, from Ipswich in 1971, after playing for Swifts in their 8-7 loss to Brothers in the 1970 grand final. Morris won grand finals with Easts in 1977 and 1978, with Des the captain-coach.

Morris played seven matches for Queensland in the 1970s, and made his Test debut against New Zealand at Lang Park in 1978, later that year touring Britain and France with the Kangaroos.

I don't think Queensland has had a better tight head prop than Rod Morris.

John Lang FOG #12

He toured New Zealand with Australian teams in 1977 and 1980, and finished his career as a member of the history making, undefeated Kangaroo tour of Britain and France in 1982. He played a total of 15 Tests for Australia.

He also represented New South Wales six times from the Balmain club, which he joined in 1979. He was chosen from Balmain for the inaugural Origin match in 1980 and the stand-alone fixture in 1981.

Morris returned to Brisbane at the end of the 1981 season, and was talked out of retirement to play under the coaching of his brother, Des at Wynnum Manly. It turned out to be one of the best decisions of his life, as Wynnum Manly, with Rod as captain, won their first ever top-grade premiership.

Rod also played all three Origin matches for Queensland that year, as well as a match for the Maroons against the touring Kiwis, at Lang Park.
