The Griffith Gold Coast Panthers have roared back into finals contention thanks to their 28-12 victory over the competition leading Griffith Logan Redbacks in a brutal round eight University Rugby League Qld clash at Runaway Bay.

With Griffith bragging rights at stake, the Panthers came out firing against their more-fancied rivals.

Thanks to try scoring doubles from Chris Hanneman, Matthew Beaton and Travis Drury, the home side was able to secure a much-needed three competition points and outright second place on the ladder.

The QUT Trouts also cruised back into form thanks to their 62-16 thumping of the Griffith Dragons at a bitterly cold Nathan campus.

Trouts five-eighth Richard Kay enjoyed a memorable night out, crossing for three tries and booting 9 conversions for a personal tally of 30 points, while the elusive Elisha Kiddie was a constant menace for the Dragons.

And the UQ Hounds produced the upset of the round courtesy of their 42-12 romp over an under-strength USQ Ironbarks in Toowoomba.

In an electrifying performance to match their dazzling new playing strip, the Hounds produced a solid team performance to record a comprehensive eight tries to two victory and leapfrog the Ironbarks into fourth place.

Round nine action sees the Trouts play host to the Redbacks at Aspley, the Dragons do battle with the Ironbarks and the Panthers and Hounds face off at Nathan.
