TWEED Heads bid for an Intrust Super Cup finals spot took a savage blow yesterday afternoon when the Seagulls were comprehensively beaten 40-0 by a rampant Redcliffe Dolphins at Piggabeen Sports Field.
The match started in the worst possible way for the home side with the opening kick-off sailing over the dead ball line on the full and Redcliffe making the most of the leg up with five-eighth Cameron Cullen sliding over for a try from the ensuing set of six.
Redcliffe continued to dominate possession, before another kick out on the full by Tweed lead to the Dolphins second try, this time to winger Liam Georgetown in the 13th minute.
Tweed managed to steady the ship as both sides struggled to complete their sets in gusty conditions, before another try to Cullen 10 minutes from half-time saw Redcliffe go into the break leading 14-0.
Any hopes of a comeback by the Tweed in the second half were quickly snuffed out with Redcliffe scoring twice in the first 10 minutes following the break, including a scintillating try to fullback Joe Bond, before three more tries in the final 15 minutes of the match saw the margin blow out to 40.
Experienced Redcliffe coach John Dixon was pleased with this sides victory, but gave credit to the hardships facing by the Tweed.
You look at the players they have on the sidelines, the number of blokes in slings or suspended today was a tough ask for them, especially considering the game they played last week, Dixon said.
In saying that though, weve come down here a few times and got our bums kicked, so todays win was pretty special.
In the home sheds Seagulls coach Aaron ZImmerle was disappointed that his players had let Redcliffe dominate them and spoke about the challenges ahead in the next few weeks.
Mentally the boys need to quickly get over the wounds from today, Zimmerle said.
