The 13th Annual Tassell Trophy Under 14 Club Challenge has been run and won in a hot and humid Cairns over the weekend.
This years winner was debut year club Emu Park Emus who play in the Rockhampton Junior Rugby League competition. Emu Park won Pool A and defeated Pool B winner Calliope Roosters, who play in the Gladstone Juniors competition, in the final.
These two towns are only about an hour apart, but they travelled all the way to Cairns (12 hours + drive) to play each other for the very first time.
St. Charles from Waverley made the huge trip from Eastern Suburbs in Sydney to spend four days in tropical North Queensland. In contrast Hughenden Hawks competed in the carnival for the second time with players from Richmond and Hughenden making up the bulk of the team with three players helping out from Cloncurry and Mt. Isa.
These players had only played four games this year and they were against themselves! So to have played five games in two days was a great experience for the MidWest Qld team. An association has been struck now between these two that will be life lasting for the players.
Townsville District Junior teams made up the bulk of the carnival with four teams (3 from Centrals ASA and one team from Brothers).
Gold Coast Juniors were represented at the TTC for the first time by Beaudesert Kingfishers who took out the Team Spirit Award for teamwork and sportsmanship shown on and off the field by their players, team officials and supporters.
The top three Cairns Junior teams were represented by Kangaroos, Brothers and Central Scorpions who all acquitted themselves well.
