Tyson Martin heads an impressive list of new recruits for the Absolute Enterprises Mackay Cutters as they prepare to defend their 2013 Intrust Super Cup premiership.
Martin is a familiar face with the Cutters and his history at the club dates back to 2010 when he was part of the preliminary final side. Following the success of that year Martin was then recruited to the North Queensland Cowboys where he has been fulltime for the past three seasons.
The Proserpine junior is part of a select group of players to have played 50 games for the Cutters and he is looking forward to returning home.
The Mackay area is where footy started for me so it is great to be coming home. Naturally I am a bit disappointed to be not staying at the Cowboys but I love Mackay and the Cutters so I cant wait to get down there, Martin said.
Coach Kim Williams is excited about the prospect of having Martin in the squad full time.
He brings a real quality to the group. He was always an outstanding contributor to the group as an allocated player so to have him here full time is a huge boost for the squad, Williams said.
Off the field, Martin will link back up with his former employer AE Smith where he hopes to complete the apprenticeship he started prior to full time rugby league.
Martin will be joined by returning front rower Rohan Ahern. Ahern was recruited to the Cutters in 2012 but his season was cruelly cut short during the pre-season after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.
Ahern remained working in the Mackay region despite having a full year away from football.
Cutters CEO Glenn Ottaway said that the signing of Ahern was significant for the club.
When we recruited Rohan two years ago he was a marquee signing for us. The injury was devastating for him but he has remained in constant contact with me and always expressed a desire to get back to the level he was at,Ottaway said.
I caught up with him last week and you can tell there is a real desire within. He looks in very good shape already so he has obviously been working hard and I am sure he will make a big impact in our squad.
Both players will join returning players as well as the new recruits when pre-season kicks off on November 14.
More news regarding Cutters gains and losses for 2014 will be released in the coming weeks.
