THE Stanthorpe Junior Rugby League was recently awarded the honour of Community Event of the Year for the Vic Jensen Under 11 Carnival.

The award was given by the Southern Downs Regional Council as part of the Australia Day Awards in Stanthorpe.

The event was nominated for the award by Mick Jensen who is the Stanthorpe Sports Association Coordinator and was also part of the organising committee.

Mike Grew was the convenor of the carnival which ran in the Stanthorpe Gremlins home ground of Sullivan Oval.

“The carnival was a resounding success and demonstrated that small country towns not only benefit greatly economically from an event such as this but are more than capable of hosting these events,” Grew said.

“All the coaches, managers and trainers from the eight competing regions were full of praise for the standard of the fields and the effort the people of Stanthorpe put in to make them feel welcome.”

The Vic Jensen Carnival is run by the Queensland Primary Schools Rugby League Committee and is held every year in the June school holidays and runs for five days.

Grew said he and the Darling Downs School Sport regions began planning the event in November 2012 with an initial meeting between DD school reps and reps from the Gremlins.

The club had about 25 volunteers helping during the carnival.
