This Saturday night heralds the commencement of the 2014 Toowoomba Rugby league competition, with two fixtures set down for Saturday night and three on Sunday.
The big improvers in 2013, Wattles Warriors, take on the Souths Tigers in what should be a stirring clash at the Clive Berghofer Stadium. Once again, Wattles will look to star half-back Matthew Duggan to guide the side around the park with his excellent kicking and passing game. Don’t be surprised if this game goes to the final bell with both sides evenly matched.
Last season’s grand finalists Valleys Roosters start their season at home against a new look Highfields Eagles. Pundits will get their first chance to look at the new season representative recruits for Highfields. English hooker Nathan Bevan and Brisbane second rower Jordie Smith should provide plenty of interest for local spectators. Valleys major signing is former Brothers premiership player front rower, Bryce Denman, who will be a handful for the Highfields pack.
Brothers will clash with Warwick in what is expected to be a tough encounter. The Warwick Cowboys have performed admirably in the pre-season games and will enter the game as favourites.
The Dalby Diehards will be at home to the Oakey Bears. Dalby have named a formidable side with the Berrigan brothers expected to feature prominently.
The last game of the round is between reigning premiers Gatton and the Pittsworth Danes. The Danes will be keen to upset the premiers in their first away game for the season. Good luck to all players for the start of what promises to be a stellar season.
