The Deception Bay Bombers stamped their authority in the Open 1 North game against Mitchelton thrashing the Panthers 52-4 in a ruthless display of textbook rugby league.
It was all one way traffic to the Bombers who clearly outclassed a hapless Panthers side who not only were outclassed in size but also in attack.
Deception Bay had their first try courtesy from a nice run from lock Hamish Hunt who found his centre Mick Mcgrady who scored under the posts and this in turn would be the start of an avalanche of points for the Bombers. Fullback Boney made no mistake with the conversion in front to make the score 6-0.
The Bombers were soon in again with some clever scrum base play from five-eighth Tye Ingebrigtsen and found a flying Mcgrady who in turn lobbed a beautiful pass overhead to find an unmarked Jackson Clarke and he ran down the sideline untouched to score another Bombers try taking the lead out to 10-0.
Mitchelton tried to match it with the huge Bombers pack but were easily outmuscled and paid dearly with some punishing defence. At times the Panthers showed some patches of good fortune, but disorganisation and a lack of urgency had the Bombers making easy metres to play most of the game in the Panthers half.
The tries kept coming and this time it was hard working prop Mick Smith who went over close to the uprights. Conversion again was easily successful and the Bombers raced out to an early 16-0 lead. It was evident that the Mitchelton forwards could not match the hulking Bombers pack so they turned to their backs and some well drilled plays from halfback Daniel Rowe and five-eighth James Bannnermann were not enough to outclass the Bombers side.
A stunned Mitchelton side were left scratching their heads again as hulking replacement forward Samir Hadzijusufovic steamrolled his way over the white chalk and added to the Bombers tally. With Boney again making kicking for goal look like child’s play, neatly slotted another goal to have the Bombers 22-0 in front.
The nightmare continued for the Panthers with prop Mick Smith catching the Panthers defence unawares just before the break and went over for his second try of the afternoon. A scoreline of 28-0 at the break looked like being a horror afternoon for the Panthers.
The second half started off badly for the Panthers with a knock on by fullback Mitch McKellar straight from the kick off to have Deception Bay straight on the attack and hungry for more points. Again the Bombers powerful pack had no trouble crossing the tryline and it was Hadzijusufovic again who barged his way over to have the Bombers in a commanding lead at 34-0.
The Bombers backs were still not finished in the tryscoring department and it took a brilliant side stepping run by fullback Boney to find halfback Clarke again who raced 40 metres down the western touchline untouched to score his double for the afternoon. A brilliant sideline conversion had the scoreboard attendant earning his money and now was an impressive 40-0.
A string of repeat sets for the Bombers resulted in their next try when Ingebrigtsen put over massive prop Mosa Pelite beside the sticks further adding to the Panthers embarrassment. With Boney adding a simple conversion, the homeside skipped away to a healthy 46-0 scoreline and they were close to racking up a cricket score.
It was still not over for the Panthers who had no answer to the Bombers pack and a hat-trick to Mick Smith who was tireless throughout the game, notched up the half century for the Bombers to send the home crowd into a frenzy.
At 52-0 it was now or never for the Panthers to get on the scoresheet and full credit to them for not throwing in the towel, they responded with a brilliant 40/20 kick from Bannermann which had the Panthers in good field position to at least get one meat pie for the afternoon.
It was left to quick thinking from hooker Jake Morris to scoot over from dummy half to add some consolation to the scoreline. A terrible missed conversion from right in front of the posts was the story of the Panthers woeful afternoon. Final score Deception Bay 52 Mitchelton 4.
