The Norths Devils have handed the Herbert River Crushers their first loss in the 2014 Townsville and Districts Rugby League competition, defeating the defending premiers 18-16.
The match, played at Peggy Banfield Park in atrocious conditions, saw the Devils seal a win thanks to the heroics of Norths winger Yamba Bowie busting his way through two defenders and running 90 metres to score, giving North's a memorable victory.
It was hard going from the outset with the match being played in cyclonic rain. However, with the Crushers missing the experience of halfback Mitch Seri, form centre of the competition Anthony Perkins and second rower Andrew Quabba, they struggled to complete their sets and find their rhythm in attack.
This was also compounded with injuries in the first quarter of the game to second rower Colin Wilkie and winger Matt Harvey which left the Crushers undermanned.
Despite fielding an inexperienced side the Crushers clawed their way back into the game holding a slender lead in the first half before Bowie's first brilliant individual try just before half time where he chipped and chased on half way, showed great poise and composure to regather the greasy ball on the fly and ran 50 metres to give Norths a four point lead at the break.
The second half turned into an arm wrestle with neither side being able to put the foot down and close the match out.
The Crushers were left to lament poor last tackle options as their killer instinct in attack shown in recent weeks deserted them.
The Crushers held a 16‒12 lead with only minutes remaining before Bowie’s remarkable length of the field try broke the Crushers hearts and gave Norths a well-deserved victory.
