Runaway Bay snapped a four game losing streak with a 36-22 win over the Burleigh Bears on Saturday.

The Seagulls hadn’t tasted victory since back in round one but they turned it on in front of their home fans to defeat the fancied Burleigh side.

“It was much improved on what we have been doing,” Runaway Bay coach Jace Van Dijk said.

“We’ve been building to a performance like that. We were pretty good last week against Southport and then we improved a little bit again this week.

“Burleigh had a strong team with a few Intrust Super Cup players coming back so I’m very happy with the win.”

Plenty of new recruits joined the Bay this season and against Burleigh it appeared to finally come together for them.

Van Dijk said Bay’s best is likely to come in the second half of the year when new combinations are established and said getting the basics right was the key on the weekend.

“We haven’t been able to catch the footy,” he said.

“We’ve been at 30-35% completions; all we’ve been doing is tackling most weeks. I think we were close to 70% completions on the weekend and that made a massive difference. “

Debutant Jordan Sims was called up from under 19s to take his place in the side and earned player’s player. Winger Andrew Seufale was also a stand out with three tries.

The win sees Bay move into fifth spot on the competition ladder. In other results from the sixth round of the Coast-2-Coast Bycroft Cup Tugun edged out Bilambil 28-24, Southport thumped Cudgen 56-16 and Tweed Heads defeated Currumbin 42-10.
