New threat in TDRL

University showed that they could be the dark horse for the 2014 TDRL premiership after notching up an emphatic victory over the Centrals Tigers at Joe Baker Field on Saturday night. 

The Saints dominated from start to finish running away 46‒10 winners against a depleted Tigers outfit. 

It took the Saints only 90 seconds to assert their dominance on this match with a mid-field break by Jared Evans. 

From the ensuing set the Saints spread the ball wide and winger Richard Martin found himself on the end of a flat ball to go over just inside the right touchline. 

That began a miserable night for the Tigers who found themselves down by three tries in the first 15 with only errant goal kicking saving respectability on the scoreboard. 

Centrals were their own worst enemies with consistent poor handling early in sets giving up cheap field possession to the Saints. 

Centrals finally put some pressure on the Saints line crossing for a try in the 38^th minute to take 28‒6 deficit into halftime. 

Early in the second half Centrals showed glimpses of the fighting spirit which has been successful for them so far this season striking out wide on the back of back to back penalties to take the score to 28‒10. 

However their joy ended there as University romped home late in the game. 

University centre Daniel Pickering was outstanding on the University right edge scoring a try and having the last pass in another two.  

It appears the young Saints are growing in confidence and have every right to be confident in aiming for a top four finish.    ​
