Even after trekking more than 1000km along Queensland’s country roads, Trevor Gillmeister’s sense of humour remains intact.

Sporting a new lean figure, ‘The Axe’ posted this picture on his Facebook page today, saying that he’s “ready to ride this Saturday if a (horse) trainer wants me”.

Gillmeister has now reached the small town of Tiaro, 27km south of Maryborough.

All going well, Gillmeister will safely arrive at his final destination – Nundah’s Bishop Park – by this Monday.

It will cap off a remarkable feat by the former Maroons skipper, who set off from Townsville on September 26 to raise awareness about asbestos.

The “Taking the Axe to Asbestos” campaign has so far raised more than $56,000.

Gillmeister was overwhelmed by the hospitality in Tiaro, with locals donating $2000 to the cause.
