The Redcliffe Dolphins will get their premiership title defence underway when they host the Tweed Heads Seagulls at Dolphin Oval this Sunday.

While the Dolphins were strong all last season, their grand final victory was somewhat of an upset, with their opponents on the day the Burleigh Bears having claimed the minor premiership with a large nine-point buffer over their nearest rivals – who just happened to be the Phins.

This year, the Dolphins are being coached by club legend Michael Roberts and will also welcome back a number of players from last year’s successful side including Rinsma Saueha, fullback Josh Beehag, Tyson Gamble, halfback Mitch Wilson and Joshua Rudolph.

For their first game, the Bears will travel to Davies Park on Sunday to take on the Magpies who just missed out on a finals finish last year and will be looking forward to opening their account against the minor premiers.

The side also have a new coach in Darryl Fisher, and while they have retained some key players from last season including halves pairing Sam Grant and Daniel Schwass; players from the Gold Coast’s Mal Meninga Cup sides last season are also being given an opportunity in the new division.

The first game of the season will be played on Saturday afternoon on the Sunshine Coast with the Falcons hosting the Norths Devils.
