A barnstorming performance from winger Ramon Filipine was the icing on a strong showing from Logan Brothers in their season opener on Saturday.

The former Ipswich Jet, who notched his 100th Intrust Super Cup appearance with Souths Logan last year, crossed twice in Brothers 40-32 victory over Valleys at Civic Park.

Filipine was unavailable in the pre-season due to injury but was heavily involved in his first match of the year.

“I love having Ramon, he chews the metres up,” Brothers coach Jason Gainey said.

“He fits in really well here and we’ll take him until Souths Logan pick him.

“(South Logan coach) Josh Hannay is trying to run him into a bit of fitness.”

Gainey was impressed with Brothers’ ability to control the ball and early defensive effort, holding Valleys to a solitary try first half try.

The result was an upset of sorts with Valleys - the pre-season Struddy’s Sports competition finalists - blown away 28-6 at halftime.

The Diehards lost both halves before the game and were forced to reshuffle their backline.

“I was really happy with the first half, in the second we got put under some pressure and our discipline let us down a little bit,” Gainey said.

Despite the lopsided score at the break, Valleys crossed for two straight tries in the second half to reduce the margin to 34-22 in the 65th minute.

However, the improbable comeback proved just that, with Ihaka Watene giving Logan breathing space with his second.

His strong showing was on the back of a coaching curveball, with Gainey switching Watene to number six after playing the pre-season in the outside backs.

“We were looking for something a bit different and a bit more service and he did a really good job for us,” Gainey said.

Brothers meet Carina next round, who pushed Redcliffe on home turf at Leo Williams Oval, holding a 14-12 lead at halftime before being overrun with Dolphins’ half Josh Brady claiming a hat-trick.

Despite finishing without a win in the Struddy’s Sports pre-season competition, Ipswich Jets top the ladder after scoring 27 unanswered second half points against West Brisbane Panthers.

At South Pine Sports Complex, Gaters sprung the biggest upset of the round, edging past Easts Tigers 14-12.
