Magpies win battle of the birds against Seagulls

by QRL Media

The Souths Logan Magpies proved too strong in their match against their feathered rivals the Tweed Heads Seagulls on Sunday, claiming a 28-10 victory – their third win this season.

The Seagulls came to Davies Park looking to restore some pride after back-to-back heavy losses to the Blackhawks and the Pride and were put on the back-foot when a ball that was batted down by winger Nat Barnes defending his line was picked up by the Broncos-contracted Marion Seve who ran through to score.

However, Sam Irwin was able to score following some good lead-up work from Leva Li – with the conversion from Blake Anderson seeing the Gulls take a slim 6-4 lead into the halftime break.

They extended that lead to 10-4 when the Magpies could not handle a Karl Lawton kick, with the ball bouncing back into the arms of Shaun Carney who dived over the line.

That however was all the points in the game for the visitors, with Souths mounting a comeback thanks mostly to the try scoring efforts of their big forwards.

Props George Fai and Herman Ese’ese proved too hard to stop close to the line, before Seve chimed in with his second after following up on a good backline play.

They went further in front when Canberra Raiders recruit Tevita Pangai, who graduated from the NYC, crashed over next to the uprights late in the game to clinch a five tries to two victory.
