Big wins for Tweed and Burleigh
Round 2 of the Gold Coast Rugby League wrapped up over the weekend – here’s a game-by-game review of the A Grade matches.
Runaway Bay Seagulls 32 def Southport Tigers 18
Playing after a loss, Runaway Bay set high goals against Southport who proved their team’s strength after their win against Ormeau last weekend. Coach Clinton Toopi wanted the boys to understand how they train reflects their on field performance, which clearly sunk in as Runaway Bay came out on top 32-18.
Tugun Seahawks 32 def Currumbin Eagles 10
In a great display of football by the local rivals, Tugun were in control for most of the game. Currumbin struggled to complete a set and were faced with a couple early penalties which set the pace for the Seahawks to take charge. Coach Martin Griese strapped on the boots to lead the team off for the first try of the game. The Eagles showed great mental toughness and got some points on the board, but Tugun were utilising the field and their forwards really well to break Currumbin’s line.
Tweed Head Seagulls 44 def Ormeau Shearers 16
An early try in the first half saw the Tweed Heads Seagulls take the lead. It was however a close first half battle between the two teams; but the Seagulls soared straight past the Shearers in the second half. Ormeau still showed some fight during the second half with the team playing positive football.
Burleigh Bears 74 v Bilambil Jets 0
Burleigh Bears made a huge recovery after last week’s loss to Tugun. The 74-0 demolition over the Bilambil Jets proved the Bears determination to be in contestant in the final series. An error by Bilambil fullback saw the first of many tries by Burleigh and one to set the pace for the game.
