This weekend, the Toowoomba Fillies will take on Wynnum Manly in the South East Queensland Women’s Rugby League competition in what will be a huge game for both clubs.
The two teams will face off for the first time this season and they will also be playing for the inaugural Clarissa Shelford Memorial Shield.
The shield is named in memory of Clarissa, Wynnum's captain last year, who tragically lost her life at the end of the year on her way home from their presentation night.
This weekend’s game will be played with a lot of pride and emotion running through all players with Clarissa’s sister and daughter both be playing for Wynnum this weekend.
Once again, it is a great show of camaraderie in the women’s game.
Whilst they go hammer and tongs on the field, off the field the women’s teams show great compassion for each other and ensure that player and team welfare is a priority in the game.
With a bottle neck at the top of the ladder, Wynnum are currently sitting on 17 points in 3rd position while the Toowoomba Fillies are currently in 9th position on 14 points.
A win to the home team could see them elevated into the top five.
For rugby league fans in Toowoomba, it would be a good opportunity to catch your local team in action this weekend.
The game kicks off at 2.30pm on Saturday at Gold Park Toowoomba. Entry is free.
