Round 16 summary, Toowoomba Rugby League

Pittsworth 70 def Oakey 14

Pittsworth travelled to Oakey on Saturday night and a good crowd welcomed the top-versus-bottom clash. Pittsworth, as expected, won the match but the Bear’s enthusiasm showed throughout the game. Danes Kurtis Shayler scored a hat-trick of tries whilst three other Pittsworth players scored doubles - Jeffrey Weber, Patrick McDonald and Brayden Wilson.

Gatton 42 def Brothers 6

Gatton sent a message to the rest of the competition with a faultless display at Cahill Park sporting complex on Saturday night. It was Gatton’s best performance of the year. They simply out-enthused their opposition with a brutal display. The Hawks slipped away to a 12-0 after 10 minutes courtesy of tries to Dennis Burgoyne and Cory Mullins who were two of Gatton’s best. They stretched their lead to 16-0 until Michael Cochrane scored to keep Brothers in the game at half-time.

It was just after half-time when the Hawks tied up the match. Michael Frohloff scored the try of the game when Alex Ambia, Robbie Fletcher and Allan Morris combined for Frohloff to finish a great team try.

Brothers had no answer and were outplayed all night. Michael Witt and Matthew Rose tried hard to ignite their side but to no avail.

Tries to Hawks Alex Groves and Francis Han sealed a comprehensive win for the Lockyer Valley side.

Souths 36 def Dalby 20

The early premiership favourites travelled to Dalby to reignite their season. Souths would go into the game with everything to lose but they stood and were counted. They went back to what they do well and that is speed. Corey Blades and Aaron Hooper scored hat-tricks in a clinical display.

Dalby coach Kerry Carmichael even admitted it was good to watch Hooper and Blades. They were the difference in the 36-20. Corey Blades scored two early tries then the game settled down until half-time when Aaron Hooper took an intercept to score right on the buzzer. Then in the first minute of the second-half, Blades scored his third to put Souths in front 22-0. That was basically the game. The Diehards showed some fight to make the score respectable but Aaron Hooper scored two more tries for the Tigers. Hooper and Blades seemed to always keep the game at arm’s length of Dalby.

Luke Nolan won the Hutchies player of the round. He played well in the absence of Brendan Hall and took on a more leadership role and it paid dividends.

Xavier Manley was Diehards best with strong games by the Taylor brothers.

Goondiwindi’s centre Ryan North scored a hat-trick of tries with Ronnie David and Calvin Skinner playing well for the Boars.

Valleys on the other hand needed to dig deep to overcome the enthusiastic Boars outfit.
