The Sunshine Coast Falcons were able to hold on to their second-place ranking in the 2017 Intrust Super Cup as they held off the Redcliffe Dolphins at Sunshine Coast Stadium on Saturday, winning 28-24.

The physical match came to a close finish. The Falcons were playing with only 12 men in the last 10 minutes and the Dolphins were able to capitalise and bring in a try and conversion, but it was not enough to take down their Sunshine Coast rivals.

“With Redcliffe, you never secure a win until the 80th minute,” Falcons coach Craig Ingebrigtsen said.

“I’m very proud of the way we stuck in there and showed a lot of resilience in our defence.”

The Dolphins saw tries from Sam Anderson, Joshua Beehag, Nick Slyney and Tyson Gamble. Gamble also contributed with two conversions.

Sunshine Coast kept up with the night's scoring with tries from Alex Bishop, Christopher Lewis, Justin Olam and Jye Ballinger. Halfback Guy Hamilton converted three kicks throughout the game, continuing his impressive scoring pace this season as he sits second in the top-points-scorers list.

“He’s been instrumental in our success this year so far,” Ingebrigtsen said.

“He understands the game really well, and he is a really good goal kicker, so he is a valuable component of our team.”

Now the Falcons are looking at a break in the action as they go into their bye week before heading off to face the Burleigh Bears in a Country Week match-up.

According to Ingebrigtsen, despite the break, his squad will not be taking too much time off when it comes to the practice field.

“We’re going to practice and train a lot harder this week,” he said.

“We’re going to give them four days off at the end of the week, but early in the week we’re going to put a lot of focus and emphasis on our practice and training this week.”

Meanwhile, the Redcliffe Dolphins are looking to bounce back from Saturday's performance, as they take on the 9th places Wynnum Manly Seagulls at the Dolphin Oval on Saturday night. Kickoff is 7pm.
