More opportunity for Toowoomba’s youngsters

More juniors than ever will be playing footy in Toowoomba with the introduction of an Under 6 competition.

Adding the new age group to the Toowoomba Junior Rugby League season will give youngsters more time on the field and with the ball.

TJRL president Dan Aldons said the new competition would boost participation numbers which were already on the rise.

"We want as many boys and girls playing the game. It's important we're sending the message that our game is the sport of choice,” Aldons said.

"Parents want to see their kids having fun and enjoying their rugby league in a safe and friendly environment, particularly their younger ones.

"We hope the change introduced from this season will ensure more boys and girls are given a greater opportunity to have a go, throw the footy around and walk off the field each week having had a lot of fun with their friends,” Aldons added.

The rules for Under 6s will be the same for Under 7s; smaller teams, giving players a "second chance” and handing over to the opposition after a try.

Children born in 2012 and 2013 are eligible to register for the new Under 6 season.( They have to be aged 5 by July 1.)

The move was endorsed at the TJRL Management Committee Meeting in December.
