Mornington Island Raiders need help to play in Cluster

The Mornington Island Raiders are looking for sponsors to get them to their Battle of the Gulf Cluster Round in Normanton on May 26.

If there was any doubt that Queensland is the state most passionate about ruby league, they would easily be dispelled by the efforts the Mornington Island team has to go through to get to their Battle of the Gulf Cluster games.

Up to a six-hour boat trip in 4-5 metre waves, three hours on a bus from Burketown to Normanton, and that's just one way.

Once the Raiders get to their venue, they'll have physio in the morning to help them recover from the bumps they get from boat travel and driving over dirt roads.

They've played three tough games after sleeping in swags they brought themselves, whether they're borrowed or bought, they'll be wet from the trip, and some players use borrowed football boots.

All of their gear, insurance and registration is up to the standards of the QRL; their only obstacle to playing rugby league effectively is distance.

Over three rounds they haven't notched up a victory, but it hasn't stopped them from turning up anyway.

Once the carnival finishes, they'll do it in reverse, totalling 18 hours of travel time for an hour of rugby league, such is the passion for the game.

The Raiders are looking for $10,000 in sponsorship to fly the team to Normanton for their May 26 games.

If you are interested in sponsoring the Raiders, please contact Scott Nosworthy on 4771 6166.
