Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett has praised winger Corey Oates for his amazing 69th-minute match-winning put-down against the Sharks and backed the 2017 Maroons flanker for an Origin recall.

"No one else could have scored the try he scored, it was amazing stuff," Bennett said of Oates's incredible try.

"For a guy his size he's certainly very athletic. "The really good wingers know how to find the try line, he knew as soon as he got there he scored."

Bennett said Oates deserved a recall to the Queensland Origin team.

"He's played Origin [previously] and he's in the best for I've seen him in," Bennett said.

"His last month or six weeks of football have been quite outstanding and more involved that he's ever been."

Oates's try was important because it sealed the 20-16 win  and the victory was vital given the contest was seventh versus eighth.

The eighth-placed Broncos were desperate to hit back after their worst 40 minutes of the season in last week's loss to Melbourne.

Bennett said he was particularly pleased with the quality start and first half completion rate of 18 from 19.

He described the win as "gutsy and gritty".

"[The first half] laid the platform for us to take a fair bt of juice out of them," he said.

"We played with a guy in the sin bin for 10 minutes and only had one try scored on us."

Bennett was also asked about news Storm coach and possible Brisbane coaching candidate Craig Bellamy had agreed to extend his stay at Melbourne, potentially opening the door for Bennett to extend his own stay at Red Hill.

"I'm not sure about that I put a proposal to our chief executive [Paul White], it's up to them to take it to the board," was all Bennett offered.

"I put a proposal to Paul, we will wait and see."

Waiting game for Bennett
