Statewide score wrap: The Bears are havin' a party

As their harmonious team song suggests, the Burleigh Bears are certainly having a party on the Gold Coast at the moment.

The QTOP A Grade defending premiers notched up their fourth win from as many starts in style on Sunday with a 66-0 drubbing of Tugun and aren't looking at slowing down anytime soon.

Queensland Under 18 high-flying winger Alofi Khan-Pereira continues to score tries week-after-week, adding another three four-pointers to his personal tally of nine at the weekend.

Not to be a gatecrasher, but similar success is also being shared across the state, as Wynnum Manly in Brisbane; Goodna Eagles in Ipswich; Townsville Brothers and West Tigers in Mackay; and Northern Pride Reef Kings in Cairns also celebrate an empty loss column at the mid-way point of the 2020 season.

In Safe Hands Cup - Brisbane

The gap is beginning to widen between teams four and five on the In Safe Hands Cup ladder at the halfway point of the competition, thanks to a scintillating passage of play from Carina in the dying minutes at Brighton.

Wynnum Manly are now five from five and remain on top of the pack, getting the job done 42-10 over Pine Rivers at home.

It was also a big win for Wests who dominated Normanby at Bert St Clair 54-0 - Brandon Downey and Tom Butterfield both troubling the scorers with doubles.

Jack Miers' move to five-eighth worked a trick for Valleys in their quest over Bulimba, shutting out the Bulldogs in the second 40 to win 64-12, and the match of the round lived up to its name at Brighton, going down to the wire.

The Roosters led 28-24 with eight minutes to play... enter Zac Taibi.

The Tigers fullback delivered the clutch play, ducking and weaving through the defensive line to touch the chalk to lock the game up.

He was then tasked with the responsibility to add the match-winning two points - and in breezy conditions from about 10 metres out from the touchline, he did.

The Tigers were able to hold on, despite the gallant effort from the home side, consolidating fourth spot and adding a nice buffer between them and their challengers who remain fifth.

Holcim Cup - South East Queensland Women

The Tweed Seagulls were the surprise packet in Round 4 of the Holcim Cup, registering their first two competition wins in style.

Representative star Chelsea Baker's move to the halves with Tarryn Aiken was a winning play by Seagulls coach Mike Castle, combining to score three tries between the pair.

The highly-anticipated match up between heavyweights Souths Logan and Burleigh was not for the faint-hearted, as both teams fought hard to claim top spot.

At full-time, the Bears were too good, winning 16-10, but a late Meg Ward try allowed the Magpies to win the second half and scalp a point despite the loss.

The game also cements both teams into the grand final in two weeks' time, regardless of the results in this weekend's last round of regular fixtures.

QTOP A Grade Premiership - Gold Coast

The Burleigh Bears are flying on the Gold Coast after Round 4, clipping the Tugun Seahawks' wings by a huge margin.

The defending premiers have a number of Intrust Super Cup and Hastings Deering Colts representatives back in Bears A Grade colours this season, including the off-field assistance of Luke Page as water boy and Rick Stone assisting the coaching staff.

Runaway Bay were able to end Southport's reign in the Bycroft Cup, edging out their rivals by a mere two points.

In a see-sawing, low-scoring contest, an all-important try was scored by Jamie Anderson to level the scores, and Souths Logan half Guy Hamilton slotted the two points from the sideline in style giving the Seagulls a two-point buffer which they were able to hold onto at full-time.

In the final match of the round, doubles to Currumbin's Josh Walker and Cole Geyer denied Ormeau's chance to register their first win of the season, narrowly going down to the Eagles 28-22.

Volunteers Cup - Ipswich

The Goodna Eagles came out on top in the battle of the birds against the Hawks, keeping their undefeated 2020 streak alive with a 44-28 win over Gatton.

Although the Hawks crossed the line first, six unanswered tries in 28 minutes by the Eagles all but drew the curtains on Gatton's chance of an upset, although they never gave up the fight against the ladder-leading juggernauts.

It has been another frustrating week for West End with the Bulldogs' four-point loss to Valleys their third-consecutive loss by only one score.

Their effort couldn't be questioned against last year's TRL premiers, even scoring one more try than their counterparts, but Dwayne Duncan's boot proved to be the difference.

Josh Chappell - on loan from Dalby - was also a handful for the West End defence, scoring a hat-trick in their third win of the season.

In the final match of the round, Norths were able to tame their Tigers cousins, Souths - Ty Humphries scoring a treble for the Ipswich club in their 34-18 win.

Souths played well but did not get the biscuits. Let’s hear from their coach Liam Capewell

Components Only Cup - Mackay A Grade

The butcher's stripes were worn exclusively at Leprechaun Park on Saturday as the Townsville Brethren defeated their Mackay counterparts 36-18 in a high-quality game.

The win keeps Townsville undefeated alongside West Mackay, who dominated Carltons 42-22 despite missing seven of their starting 13.

If both Townsville Brothers and Wests register wins in the next two weeks, the stage will be set for an almighty final round encounter for the minor premiership.
