Statewide score wrap: So much footy

There was plenty of excitement for the return of almost all senior community rugby league competitions in Queensland at the weekend.

Brisbane Premier A Grade

Wynnum Manly proved too strong against the plucky Brighton Roosters in last weekend’s opening round of the Brisbane Premier A Grade competition.

The seven tries to five effort to win 34-22 at Kitchener Park was the perfect start for the defending premiers.

It took only 11 minutes for first points with Seagulls fullback Brandon Jackonia finishing off a length of the field movement to score in the top left hand corner - skipper Aaron Booth did all the hard work to beat three defenders before a floating pass to the support play.

The Seagulls led at half-time 20-0.

The Roosters first points came from a try by benchman Izacc Acworth in the 54th minute and they took the second half 22-14 to take some confidence into their next clash with neighbours Pine Rivers.

Seagulls coach Darren Ferricks gave credit to the Roosters post-match.

“They never go away Brighton. We didn’t match them with the same intensity that we showed in the first half," Ferricks said.

"We lost a bit of direction when Booth came off but we have plenty to work on and we have the bye this weekend to sort that."

In other games, Bulimba coach Michael Lambert was stoked for his side's 30-28 win over Valleys at Balmoral Sports Reserve.

“I have never showed that much emotion than this after the siren win over one of the genuine big dogs," Lambert said.

The West Brisbane Panthers held on to defeat the competition debutants Beenleigh at Frank Lind Oval; meanwhile, Normanby put 42 points on the board over Pine Rivers for their first win at home.

Bundaberg Broadcasters Premiership

Contributed by QRL Bundaberg correspondent Vince Habermann

There appears to be a swing in power after two rounds of the Bundaberg Broadcasters A Grade Premiership with three teams without a win after Saturday’s matches.

Reigning champions Past Brothers - who won the title six times in the last decade, Waves Tigers - who have contested three grand finals in four seasons since Antonio Kaufusi took their coaching reins, and Wallaroos - the pride of Maryborough - have traditionally been in the thick of things.

The three first-round victors each franked their credentials, with Hervey Bay Seagulls turning it on for their home fans at Stafford Park, outgunning Brothers 32-20, and at Salter Oval, Wests Panthers putting Roos to the sword 60-30, and Easts Magpies withstanding a fierce Tigers’ challenge before emerging 24-12 victors.

The Seagulls, who had a dramatic fall from grace after sweeping all before them in 2016, culminating in an historic grand final victory over Waves, but finished the last season (2019) strongly, sneaking into the elimination final, before being knocked out, recruited strongly under new co-coaches Chris Trevillion and Jacob Blanke.

After shocking Waves 23-22 in the season opener, they again looked the real deal, having six individual try scorers in a robust all-round performance.

But the Panthers dazzled, racking up 11 tries, with doubles to electrifying centre Dyirun Johnson and Jensen Deamer, and under 18 excitement machine fullback Chris Robinson notching 16 points with one try and six conversions.

By contrast, the East v Waves match was in the balance, with the Magpies unable to extend their 12-6 half-time lead until explosive centre Matthew Ross grabbed an intercept and sprinted 90m to score in the 66th minute and captain and reigning BRL player of the year Matthew Craven landed another booming sideline conversion.

Then when high-class recruit five-eighth Andreas Nona scored his second try five minutes later and Craven added the extras, the Tigers’ spirits could have been broken, but to their credit, their captain Reece Maughan grabbed a consolation try in the dying seconds and Layton Chambers also converted from close to touch.

Round 2 results

Easts Magpies 24 (Andreas Nona 2, Matthew Ross, Craig Bek tries; Matthew Craven 4 goals) defeated Waves Tigers 12 (Tom Dexter, Reece Maughan tries; Layton Chambers 2 goals)

Hervey Bay Seagulls 32 (Mitchell Laughton, Scott Walthall, Dylan Crockford, Jeremiah Pati, William Walthall, Dion Bunyan tries; Legona Vetemotu 4 goals) defeated Past Brothers Bundaberg 20 (Danny Moran 2, Tyrell Priestley 2 tries; Zak Bainbridge 2 goals)
