Statewide score wrap: Gundy goodness

The Goondiwindi Boars are running rampant in the Hutchies A Grade Cup in Toowoomba, undefeated after nine rounds of play.

Their only stumble was a 22-22 draw against Gatton in Round 4, otherwise the boys from near the border are dominating in the Darling Downs' first grade competition.

Led by captain / coach Travis Waddell; the middle forward has leant on his 78 games of NRL experience to lead the Boars around Gilbert Oval and is hoping to continue fending off title challengers like Warwick, Highfields and Wattles.

At the halfway mark of the 2021 season, the Normanby Hounds remain the only undefeated side after Round 9 concluded last weekend.

The Hounds hosted Carina and it was the Tigers to score first through half Dave Russell.

Normanby hit back in the 18th minute, and when Tiger David Pritchard was sent off, the Hounds scored five more tries after half-time to the depleted Tigers single touchdown to register a 34-10 win.

Bulimba were at home to the Bears and as expected, the game produced end-to-end football with the lead changing several times.

Pine Rivers held out to take the win 34-30 with the highlight of the match being a Bulldogs try off the back of a 'mouse trap move', allowing Manaia Cherrington to dart over to take the score out to 30-22, but the Bears powered home to remain in the top five.

Valleys returned after a bye and suffering five straight losses, the men in blue were out to resurrect their season against the Roosters.

Brighton had gone down by a Lachlan Cooper field goal against Normanby the week before and were out to get their three competition points back.

The visitors led at the break 22-18; however with the home crowd behind the Diehards, Valleys kept the Roosters scoreless while scoring a treble to post a much-needed win for last year’s semi-finalists.

The Panthers came from a 22-12 deficit at half-time to take the lead midway through the second half at home against the Wynnum Manly Seagulls - two penalties from the boot of Brandon Jackonia got the Seagulls home in the end.

The win for the Baysiders has them outright second on the ladder, while the Panthers' first loss in six rounds has them equal-third with the Bears.

The clash between the two clubs equal second on the TRL ladder lived up to its hype on Saturday night at Father Ranger Oval; but in a tough match - where defence went out the window - Warwick Cowboys came from behind to clinch a narrow victory over the Highfields Eagles.

It was a much-needed win for Gatton, claiming victory on the road against Oakey 56-0 after losing their last two games.

Stand-in captain Shannon Hicks scored three tries with Luke Self scoring a double in a nine-try romp. Anava Fesolai was also unstoppable for the Hawks in his best game of the season.

Wattles travelled to Gold Park to defeat Souths 50-12 with four Warriors players scoring doubles in a 10-try display. Brendon McBryde was superb in the middle and has been the difference these last few weeks; scoring two tries of his own.

In a high scoring affair, Goondiwindi flexed their strength with a 12 tries to four victory over Newtown at Jack Martin Centre.

David Armstrong continued his try-scoring spree in 2021, grabbing another four try haul; meanwhile, Carl Clement scored a double and Kyle Munro and Tom Davis also had fine games.

A very close game at Pillar Street saw the Pittsworth Danes finally end up on the right side of the ledger with an upset win over Valleys 36-34.

The Roosters got away to a good early lead but Danes fought back to trail 24-22 at half-time.

In a tough second half, the lead changed hands a few times and was 34-34 when Chris Woodbridge slotted a penalty to seal the win.

And the Dalby Diehards returned to the winner's list with an impressive win over Brothers at Glenholme Park.

They started well with three unanswered tries to lead 16-0 after 20 minutes and went on with it in second 40 after the Leprechauns pegged back the deficit to just four points right after the break.

Bundaberg Broadcasters Premiership

With multiple premiership-winning player / coach Brent Kuskey at his vintage best in attack, defence and game management at hooker; East Magpies established a three-point lead on the Bundaberg Broadcasters A Grade Premiership ladder with a ruthlessly clinical 30-12 victory over Wests Panthers in their Round 10 top-of-the-table showdown at Salter Oval on Sunday.

While the Magpies soared to their fifth-straight victory and moved to 15 points with five rounds remaining, the Panthers suffered their third defeat in their past four starts, and they are now just one point clear of Hervey Bay, who shored up third place with a 22-8 victory over Wallaroos at Eskdale Park on Saturday with the hosts suffering their second straight home loss.

Roos remain in equal fifth and last place with Waves on 6 points after the Tigers went downing fighting to reigning champions Past Brothers 20-14 in the late match on Sunday’s program at Salter Oval, with the Brethren bouncing back from their buffeting at the hands of the Magpies a week earlier to move to 10 points and consolidate fourth position, four in advance of the co-cellar dwellers.

In a fiercely-contested affair befitting of combat between two title aspirants, there was a long delay midway through the first half with star Panthers centre Sam Robinson being taken away by ambulance after suffering a neck injury, but by that time, the Magpies had established a 12-0 buffer, which was to be the half-time score.

Wests continued to compete strongly throughout, but Easts proved simply too good after suffering their last loss when they previously met the Panthers 38-26 five weeks earlier, but they just keep going from strength to strength and they look set for the minor title and on track to end a 16-year premiership drought.

Meanwhile, the Seagulls are back in the mix following their second-straight win after snapping a four-game losing streak last Sunday against the Panthers - well-led by their champion halfback Logona Vetemotu, who contributed 10 points with a try and three conversions in a signature brilliant all-round performance.

Brothers gained revenge on Waves after being ambushed by the Tigers 46-18 at their previous meeting, with first-year club president and long-time club champion Mat Templeman - who came out of playing retirement earlier in the season to help out - playing a leading hand off the bench, bagging a double, along with first-season winger Mitchell Clayton at just his second A Grade match.

Round 9 results

Hervey Bay Seagulls 22 (Logona Vetemotu, Griffin Lowe, Jaden Carpenter, Mitchell Yarrow tries; Logona Vetemotu 3 goals) defeated Wallaroos Maryborough 8 (Brandon Law, Darcy Schofield tries)

Easts Magpies 30 (Andrea Nona, Clinton Horne, Tyrell Howard, Brent Kuskey, Justyn Porter tries; Tyrell Howard 5 goals) defeated Wests Panthers 12 (Joseph Doyle, Shaun Ezzy tries; Chris Robinson 2 goals)

Past Brothers Bundaberg 20 (Mitchell Clayton 2, Mat Templeman 2 tries; Tyrell Priestley 2 goals) defeated Waves Tigers 14 (Jobe Lister, Timoci Naco, Reece Maughan tries; Layton Chambers goal)
