Statewide score wrap: Brethren show their might in Townsville

Townsville Brothers have flexed their muscle as the team to beat in North Queensland and move to be on the cusp of claiming the premiership in an undefeated season after their semi-final dominance on Sunday.

The Brethren knocked over Herbert River 40-0 and will be hoping to avenge last year's grand final heartbreak in Mackay to return the prestigious silverware to the cabinet at Jack Manski Oval.

The Roy Baira-coached side has dominated the rest of the competition; winning all 14 home-and-away fixtures and only conceding 152 points in the regular season. They also boast strike weapons Daniel Pickering and John Cullen who sit on top of Townsville's try-scoring tally; with the centre pairing scoring a whopping 31 tries between them.

Townsville Brothers will face the winner of Herbert River and Centrals ASA who face off at the Sports Reserve on Sunday.

Bundaberg Broadcasters Premiership

Contributed by QRL Bundaberg correspondent Vince Habermann

Two tries in the space of five minutes to rookie winger Mitchell Clayton gave Past Brothers the upper-hand as they recovered from a 14-4 half-time deficit to run out 34-14 winners over Hervey Bay Seagulls in the Bundaberg Broadcasters A Grade Premiership preliminary final at Salter Oval on Saturday.

This moment of magic by Clayton was before dual premiership-winning fullback and former Australian junior softball representative Tyrell Priestley put the icing on the cake with a late double to seal the deal and send the Brethren to the decider.

The Seagulls, who had come from fourth position on the ladder, were the better team in the first half, and they established a handy 10-point lead at the break after sharpshooter Mitchell Laughton kicked a penalty goal in the 30th minute, then fullback maestro Logona Vetemotu scored a superb try, with Laughton adding the extras on the stroke of the siren.

Brothers were the first to score in the second half just six minutes after the restart with high-class centre Jayden Alberts - playing in his first match since May 30 - receiving the ball from a scrum win on their 20-metre line, stepping out of a tackle, then turning on the after-burners and sprinting 80 metres. Zak Bainbridge kicked truly to get his side back to within four points.

Hervey Bay had the better of the next 20 minutes, including creating many great scoring opportunities, but the reigning champions defended magnificently and kept turning them away.

The pendulum eventually swung, and the Brethren took the lead with 22-year-old Clayton, who had never played club football before this season and only made his A Grade debut in June, crossing in the right corner with 16 to go and Bainbridge kicking a booming sideline conversion.

Clayton then put his stamp on the match, picking up the ball after it had been jolted free in his tackle, before racing away 75 metres for the game-breaker, before Bainbridge again converted.

Still, there was time for the Seagulls, but after Alberts and Seagulls front rower Anthony Gray were sin-binned in the 73rd minute, Priestley scored on the end of two penalties in quick succession. Then with the Seagulls’ spirits finally broken, he dashed 50 metres to power over for a second time, but he was injured in the process.

Brothers had many heroes, but coach Andrew Hamilton named workaholic second rower Royce Blair, who notched their first try of the game, as their player of the match.

Brothers will now contest their third grand final in four seasons next Sunday, against minor premiers Easts Magpies, who overpowered them 38-16 in the major semi-final, aiming to add to their 2017 and 2019 titles.

Hervey Bay were magnificent in defeat, but its was a disappointing day all around for the club as they also lost the under 18 and Reserve Grade preliminary finals, both to Wests Panthers, 24-22 and 34-22 respectively.

Centre Connor Yeats and winger Jesse Young each bagged doubles for the young Panthers, while fullback Chris Robinson also notched eight points with one try and two goals, before coming off the bench in Reserve Grade and proving a match winner with two tries and two conversions.

Preliminary final result

Past Brothers Bundaberg 34 (Tyrell Priestley 2, Mitchell Clayton 2, Royce Blair, Jayden Alberts tries; Zak Bainbridge 5 goals) defeated Hervey Bay Seagulls 14 (Dion Bunyan, Logona Vetemotu tries; Mitchell Laughton 3 goals)
