Redcliffe Dolphins: Cup gains and losses for 2022

With a new NRL team on the horizon, an NRL team currently setting up home base at their stadium and a proud Hostplus Cup team gearing up for a new season under a new coach, rugby league eyes are now all pointing towards Redcliffe.

It was this buzz and excitement that attracted former Wynnum Manly Seagulls winger Ed Burns to join the Redcliffe Dolphins during the pre-season; one of a number of new players looking to make their mark at the club this year.

“Bit of a fresh change and it’s really exciting… there’s probably no more exciting place to be in footy right now than Redcliffe, just a lot of opportunity happening,” Burns said.

“I loved my time at Wynnum, have got nothing but praise for Wynnum and everything they did, but just time for a bit of a change and it’s a really good opportunity here and it’s really exciting with the new NRL team coming in.

“It’s certainly busy, it’s all happening.”

Burns, who recently finished his medical studies and is now working as a doctor at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, said he was learning a lot under new Cup coach Scott Murray and was taking a lot out of his training.

“We started in mid-November and it’s never fun, but it’s been really good,” Burns said of how pre-season was going.

“It has been a lot of skill-based stuff here, which has been great, I really enjoyed it.

“Training is tough, but a little bit different to what I have done previously, but it’s been good.

“Scott’s been great, couldn’t speak higher of him. He’s been great, he listens to the players, everyone has individual things going on, so really understanding of that.

“Just in terms of his coaching, (there is) a real emphasis on skill and probably position-specific stuff, so I have done a lot of individual skills which has been really great and helpful.

“I have tried to focus a lot on my catching, as a winger. It’s basic, your catch-pass and finishing as well and just always trying to work on my defence, particularly edge defence.

“Now that we are doing more game-based stuff, it’s a lot of that, so doing more combinations.

“He’s been great, Scotty.”

The Dolphins will start their season in Round 1 when they host the Sunshine Coast Falcons.
